The 10-Year Replacement Rule (NSW Law)

We recommend testing alarms monthly using the test button, and booking a professional inspection every 12 months to ensure full functionality and battery health.
What's the difference between hardwires and battery-operated alarms?
Hardwired alarms are connected directly to your home’s power and include a battery backup. They’re more reliable and are required in many renovations and new builds. Battery-operated alarms are easier to install but may require more frequent checks.
How do i know if my alarms need replacing?
If your alarm is more than 10 years old, chirps constantly, or fails a test, it needs to be replaced. Look for the manufacture date on the back of the alarm.
Are smoke alarms legally required in NSW?
Yes. Smoke alarms are mandatory in all residential properties. Landlords must ensure alarms are present, tested annually, and replaced every 10 years.
Can you install interconnected alarms?
